Art Gallery of Alberta Edmonton Review
The Art Gallery of Alberta offers contemporary and historical art from Alberta, Western Canada, and around the world. The museum houses a collection of over 6,000 objects and is located in the heart of Edmonton's downtown arts district.
The new 85,000 square foot building opened in January of 2010. The AGA features three floors (30,000 square feet) of exhibition space, a theatre, rental rooms, outdoor terrace, arts education centre, restaurant, café, art rental and sales gallery, and gift shop.
Events and Programs
Make sure to check the website for a very full calendar of events. Information is available for current exhibitions, programs and events, talks and lectures, fundraisers, film screenings, tours and educational programs. Fees and specific hours apply for some of the events.
A few special programs particularly caught my attention.
The museum hosts a weekly program for 3-5 years olds and their parents called Tours for Tots. Currently this event is held every Wednesdays from 10-11 am and is free with AGA admission. Billed as an art adventure time, it includes fun and hands-on activities as scavenger hunts, crafts, story time and more, all related to some of the museum's current exhibits.
Another family feature is All Day Sundays, providing art activities for family members of all ages. This is presently held on the third Sunday of each month from noon to 4pm. Attendance is free with admission and is available as a drop-in event.
The AGA provides many cultural and educational opportunities for Edmontonians including:
AGA offers a wide variety of programs for pre-school to grade 12 youth. Check online for topics, fees and times. Included in the art education programs are:
The AGA has a great online FAQ page which explains many of their programs and provides a good overview of their philosophy and features.
AGA tours are available for museum goers. See the online tours schedule for days and times or call to book a private tour. (Fees apply for private tours.)
The Art Gallery of Alberta is a not-for-profit organization. Funding is provided through members, sponsors and donors and government allocations.
