Block 1912 Edmonton Review
We decided to lunch at one of the interesting restaurants located on historic Whyte Avenue.
Finding a parking place on Whyte was a little tricky, even mid-afternoon, but we ended up near Block 1912 and decided to give it a try. We're glad we did!
Established in 1992, Block 1912 European Cafe remains a family owned and family run business.
It is located on vibrant Whyte Avenue and housed in the historic Hulburt Block building which was built in 1912. Voila! A restaurant name is born.
From outside Block 1912 Edmonton looks small but that illusion is dispelled once you walk through the doors.
On the right as you enter is a varied selection of authentic Italian Gelatos, fresh fruit Sorbettos, and soy based Tofulatis.
Samples are available upon request, and believe me it's very hard to settle on just one flavour.
After sampling the green tea Gelato (good by the way) I settled on the white chocolate raspberry.
Unlike some white chocolate food products, you can actually taste the white chocolate as well as the raspberry. A very delicious product and worth coming back for.
Block 1912 Atmosphere
High ceilings and original floors mingle beautifully with an eclectic mix of sofas, armchairs, love seats, various tables and a charming blend of dining room chairs.
Ceiling fans, mirrors, large and small pieces of art, and historic wall colors all blend nicely to produce a comfortable, friendly feel to Block 1912.
There's seating for at least 50, and the place is spacious enough so that seating can be moved around to accommodate large or small groups without feeling crowded.
Music from the 50's played in the background while young and old stopped by for a meal, beverage or dessert.
Block 1912 Edmonton Menu
The menu is as eclectic as the decor.
Hot meals, sandwiches, and light food selections are offered any time of the day. A menu board lists the selections available and you can make it a combo for an additional fee.
All food and baked goods are made on site (but not the frozen desserts - gelato etc.)
I selected the Montreal smoked meat sandwich and my husband chose the three cheese grilled cheese sandwich with French onion soup.
This is definitely not fast food but the food is well worth the wait.
My Montreal smoked meat Panini was good, but not remarkable. The side salad was pretty bare bones - fresh romaine lettuce, but uninspired in both appearance and taste.
The grilled cheese, however, was marvelous. The chef selected a perfect blend of cheeses to pique the tastebuds, providing a nice contrast of flavor and texture. Created on whole grain bread using three slices of bread and three cheeses, this sandwich is a winner.
The French onion soup was also very flavorful and delicious. A nicely herbed broth served as a base for enough (but not too many) onions. I would certainly try Block 1912's soups again.
A Paris-trained pastry chef has recently joined the staff at Block 1912 Edmonton.
The entire basement level of the restaurant is Block 1912's bakery. You can pre-order baked goods or select from choices in the display case - and some pretty amazing desserts and pastries were displayed in that showcase!
My husband tried a slice of the Chocolate Melting Pie, which was reminiscent of a chocolate volcano cake. A portion of the pie was pleasantly spongy and a portion reminded my husband of mousse. He thought it was delicious.
I opted for a piece of the Carrot Cake. A very generous portion was well-presented and served with a decorative coulis. The cake was very moist and chock full of walnuts and carrots with plump raisins, a hint of coconut and the smallest nuance of citrus.
The cream cheese icing was dense and mildly sweet with a just-right cream cheese flavor. Block 1912 offers one of the best carrot cakes I've tasted. It has all of the favor and moistness of carrot cake without the oiliness produced by some recipes.
Block 1912 offers a great variety of coffees, Italian sodas, teas, and more.
An old fashioned Coke machine holds glass bottles of Coke. Block 1912 is also licensed.
Block 1912 is a great restaurant in a great location. Stop by for a coffee and dessert, a Gelato, or a meal. You'll be glad you did.
