Cora Edmonton Review
My friend and I met for breakfast at 9am on a weekday at Cora's Breakfast and Lunch. We were seated right away and served beverages quickly.
The restaurant was moderately full and we noticed a cross section of retirees, young families, business people, and friends meeting for breakfast that day.
Right away, you notice lots of fresh fruit prominently displayed around the open kitchen area.
Cora's decor is sunny and fun, reminiscent of a brightly decorated grade school classroom.
The menu is colorful and tempts diners with such cheerful sounding choices as "seventh of july," "fruit harvest," "raspberry 4 lucie," "buckwheat blessing," "bobby botton," and "Eggs Ben et Dictine."
I ordered the asparagus and Swiss cheese option of the Eggs Ben et Dictine with the hollandaise on the side. The eggs were soft, just as I had requested, the roasted potatoes browned on the outside and tender on the inside, and the generous portion of fresh fruit artfully arranged on the plate.
Though the hollandaise sauce was flavorful, it was thick and a bit salty. The meal arrived in a decent amount of time.
My friend selected "peggy's poached," a poached egg, dish of cottage cheese, fresh fruit, and a choice of breads. The egg was as she ordered it and the fruit, cottage cheese, and bread defeated even her avowed "big appetite."
My friend's coffee was on the weak side though my friend declared, "I like my coffee weak," and I opted for water. The waitress was attentive and kept the coffee cup filled.
Great breakfast options are available at Cora's - waffles, crepes, omelettes, pancakes, eggs, breakfast meats, yogurt, and a variety of fresh fruit. Real maple syrup (think Quebec) is available at an extra charge.
If you are interested in an authentic taste of Quebec order a side of the cretons, a pleasantly spiced pork spread served at Cora's with baked beans.
Cora also serves lunch - soup, wraps, sandwiches, and salads, though breakfast selections are also available at lunchtime.
Cora Tsouflidou opened a "breakfast all day" restaurant in the Montreal area in 1987. Her smiling image graces the placemats and menus and caused my friend to comment, "Who wouldn't want to come to a restaurant where the owner looks like a friendly grandma?"
Franchises have expanded the business and Cora restaurants are now found in over 100 locations throughout Canada.
The food is good, the room is bright, and the service pleasant.
