Edmonton Winter Activities

Edmonton winter activities abound - there's plenty that you can find to do indoors and outdoors. We'll get your creative juices flowing even through the cold!

When we first moved to Edmonton, we were told we should just stay cozy and warm for the winter - just staying inside the house and reading books - showing our faces to the cold only when it's absolutely necessary.

While there are some days where you don't feel like doing much else...and all you need to do to convince yourself to stay inside is stand by the window or open the door a crack - and cold does keep you inside.

But there is no reason that you should be a hermit all winter long. There's plenty of things that you can do in the winter - right here in Edmonton.

We made a snowman...and it wasn't the easiest feat. Because Edmonton's snow is dry most of the year - you can't roll snowballs - so since we were almost waist deep in snow and the kids really wanted a snowman - we "dug out" the snowman rather than roll the balls and place them on top of each other!

• Cross-country skiing
Best spots are golf clubs, trails throughout the park system, and even walking trails throughout your community.
• Downhill skiing
Snow valley is located within the city and Rabbit Hill is not to far away.
• Skating
Outdoor rinks, such as the ones on the Alberta Legislative Grounds, are a popular place to go.
• Tobogganing / Sledding
There are tons of different places around the city where you can have fun riding a sled. Check around your local school or playground. Often, the city has left ready-made hills perfect for sledding around these areas.
• Zoo
If you're up for it and the weather's not bad, you can take advantage of the Edmonton Valley Zoo's discounted winter rates.

Edmonton Winter Things to Do Inside

Some days are just too cold to do anything outside and you just want to find some things to do indoors.

There's plenty of options.

• Bowling
• Chuck E Cheese
• Galleries
Check out one of the many galleries and studios in town.
• Hockey Games
Go to an Oilers or an Oil Kings game and feel the pride of the Oil Country.
• Museums
Check out the Royal Alberta Museum or the Alberta Aviation Museum.
• Telus World of Science
Go to Edmonton's science centre for a day of exploration and fun.
• West Edmonton Mall
• Galaxyland: Amusement Park
• Ice Palace: Skating
• West Edmonton Mall Mini Golf
• West Edmonton Mall Waterpark: World Waterpark
