Edmonton Zoo Review

edmonton valley zoo

The Edmonton Valley Zoo is a small zoo located near downtown Edmonton in an area overlooking the North Saskatchewan River.

The Zoo first opened in 1959 and promotes four values: stewardship, conservation, education, and engagement.

The zoo is inhabited by over 350 animals. When visiting the zoo you can see many different animals including:

  • Amphibians
  • frog, toad, and mantilla (small frogs native to Madagascar)

  • Mammals
  • Mammals common to zoos such as an elephant, zebra, monkey and tiger and lesser known mammals including the addax, red panda, kinkajou, and wallaby.

  • Local Canadian animals
  • otter, fox, seal, sheep, and wolf

  • Birds
  • - dozens of different birds are ready to observe including a variety of owls, hawks, emu, quail, falcon, macaw, eagle, kookaburra, parrot, swan and more

  • Reptiles
  • snakes and tortoises, and skinks (yes, skinks, not skunks, though you may glimpse a skunk while at the zoo!)

Edmonton Zoo Programs

The Edmonton Valley Zoo offer special programs year round including:

  • The travelling zoo which can be booked for special events and school presentations
  • School programs at the zoo for many different grade levels
  • Adult workshops, courses, and tours (enjoy the hands-on experience of being a zookeeper!)
  • Birthday parties
  • Zoo school - a week long program with extensive interactive classes
  • Zoo day camps
  • Public education programs and special events designed for children and families
  • Group programs and self-guided group programs with interactive hands-on experiences built in
  • Animal Talks where interpreters provide information on specific animals
  • Special event days

Check online or with zoo for specific details

Restructuring

The zoo is undergoing a comprehensive restructuring over the next few years with the goal of recreating the natural habitats of the zoo animals.

The Edmonton Valley Zoo also participates in the Species Survival Plan, working to promote survival of threatened or endangered species. The restructuring will allow the zoo to be transformed from its original "Storyland Valley Zoo" theme to a place which emphasizes the four focus values and emphasizing creative learning experiences.

A new zoo veterinary hospital has already opened. Slated for opening in 2012 is the Arctic Shores which will present a twinned indoor-outdoor habitat which reflects a real arctic shoreline. The following year will see the opening of a new educational centre, a new zoo entrance, and the Wander Trail to demonstrate and interpret the North Saskatchewan River Valley where the zoo is located.

Future changes will be a total renovation and restructuring of all indoor areas of the zoo.
