Johnson's Cafe Edmonton Review
Way back in early autumn a friend told us about the special Festive Christmas Afternoon Tea scheduled at the Hotel Selkirk at Fort Edmonton Park for the five weekday afternoons before Christmas. We were told we had to book early as this event sells out quickly.

Tea time was 1 - 3 pm.
We arrived at the Hotel Selkirk and were greeted by a pleasant host and shown to our table.
A special coat rack in the lobby for patrons meant we did not have to drape our coats on the back of the chairs.
Our server soon brought us each a teapot filled with piping hot water. A selection of gourmet teas at the table provided something for everyone.
Plenty of cream and sugar was available at the table. Our server provided honey when we asked for it.
Soon, we were served warm scones, lightly dusted with icing sugar.
A trio of accompaniments produced oohs and aahs from the ladies.
The fruit compote was a daily cook's choice recipe. We enjoyed cranberries, blueberries and a hint of rhubarb, all mildly spiced and sweetened.
A delicious blended berry butter, and thick, whipped fruit cream rounded out the trio of scone toppings.
A wonderfully flavorful turkey pot pie was placed before each of us. The flaky puff pastry topper was presented separately from the filling. One could choose to enjoy the topping as a bread, or press it down to soak in the savory richness of the vegetable and meat enhanced gravy of the pot pie.
Our palates were cleansed with a nicely-presented fresh mint fruit cup. I especially appreciated that the fresh fruit was cut into smaller pieces.
The thinly julienned strips of fresh mint added just the right flavor contrast to the fruit.
Finger sandwiches presented on a tiered serving tray looked as delicious as they tasted. My favorite was the honey ham and cream cheese pinwheels which had a mildly smoky flavor.
Others in the group especially liked the cranberry, cheese and cucumber sandwiches or the egg salad on rye.
The desserts were plentiful, varied in color and texture, and reminded me of Christmas baking from years ago.
Cranberry pistachio shortbread cookies were baked to perfection. Coconut macaroons were festive with green and red candied cherry accents. The mini pecan tarts were full of nuts and baked just right.
Homemade fudge brownies piped with a jaunty cap of red, green and white icing made a lovely addition to the dessert selection.
The food was very good with hot things served hot and cold goods served cold.
The high tea at Johnsons Cafe Edmonton presented us with a very nice variety of tastes, textures and colors. We all had more than enough to eat and enjoyed the food, the setting and the camaraderie with friends.
I'm looking forward to making a reservation for high tea at the Hotel Selkirk this summer or stopping by to order something delicious off the menu when the park opens for the new season.
