Leduc #1 Energy Discovery Centre Edmonton Review
On February 13, 1947 the position of the province of Alberta on the global market changed when Imperial Oil's Leduc #1 well struck oil.
After drilling 133 successive dry holes, Imperial Oil decided to try one to try one final hole based on geologists' recommendations. The grade and amount of oil struck surprised even the most optimistic proponents.
Once known simply as hosting an agrarian based economy, Alberta soon became a major economic player in the oil and gas market.
The museum hosts a very cool theater designed like a gigantic drill bit and offering an "immersive documentary" simulating the drilling in 1947 when oil was first discovered in Leduc.
Displays, models, memorabilia, archives, photos, equipment, and more illustrate the process and the results of that early drilling.
Guides and sometimes even retired Canadian Petroleum Hall of Famers are on hand to explain, demonstrate and describe the Leduc oil find.
