Food Served: Italian served cafeteria style at lunchtime
Pasta Brioni Edmonton Review
I am not particularly fond of Italian cuisine, so when my husband pulled up in front of the Pasta Brioni for our lunch date I thought, "Well, I can probably find something to order, even if it is Italian food."
Was I ever in for a pleasant surprise!
Famous Chicken Gigi
Lunch is served cafeteria style and diners choose from a number of daily specials listed on a large blackboard behind the food line.
As owner Maria arrives each day she decides what lunch entree to prepare along with her signature Chicken Gigi.
Patrons can choose one of the two entrees and pair it with pasta (choice of homemade sauces) or salad. Two homemade soups are available along with a selection of salads each day. The soup and sandwich special and salad and sandwich combo change each day and are listed on the menu board.
Since Pasta Brioni is known for Maria's Chicken Gigi, I ordered a serving. My husband and his friend had raved over it so I figured I'd find out what all the fuss was about. Wow! Was I glad I did!
The boneless, skinless chicken breast was lightly breaded and served with a creamy tomato sauce enhanced by fresh mushrooms and julienned slices of ham. The chicken was fork-tender and the sauce tangy, creamy, and not at all acidic. Generous portion and melt-in-your-mouth deliciousness!
I chose fettuccini pasta topped with more of the Gigi sauce. Fresh Italian rolls are included with the entrees and a side order of fresh but rather bland spinach, egg, bacon and mushroom salad completed my meal.
My husband opted for the Chicken and Sausages Peperonata with pasta. The medium-hot Italian sausages contrasted nicely with the chicken breast meat. The tomato sauce, full of chunks green peppers, tomatoes and onions, was nicely spicy. Not wanting to miss out on a favorite, he asked for Gigi sauce for his pasta.
Chicken and Sausages Peperanata
We each chose an Italian San Pelligrino soda to accompany our lunch.
The restaurant is located in a strip mall near a busy industrial area of Edmonton. As we enjoyed our lunch there was a steady stream of manual laborers, business people, retired folk and a few families coming and going from Pasta Brioni.
There is seating for approximately 80 (though we didn't count) and the restaurant stayed comfortably full throughout the lunch hour. A number of patrons chose carry out - a quick and simple choice since the entrees are hot and ready to be served.
Pasta Brioni Edmonton is reminiscent of an Italian trattoria with a mural, friendly staff and great Italian food. Though we haven't tried it yet, dinner at Pasta Brioni is available Thursday through Saturday nights where you will be waited on at your table and choose your meal from a menu of traditional Italian dishes.
If you like home cooked Italian food - or even if you think you don't - try Pasta Brioni. I'm glad I did and am looking forward to going back soon.
