Royal Alberta Museum Edmonton Review

royal alberta museum edmonton

The Royal Alberta Museum is one fantastic museum.

Formerly called the Provincial Museum of Alberta, the RAM highlights Alberta's natural history and its cultural distinctives.

The museum's mission statement as listed on website is, "To preserve and tell the story of Alberta - the experience of people and places over time - and inspire Albertans to explore and understand the world around them."

Exhibits and Galleries

The Royal Alberta Museum offers permanent exhibits, feature exhibits, and travelling exhibits from other museums.

The permanent exhibits are displayed in three separate galleries.

The Natural History Gallery offers well-appointed displays from nature. Rocks, minerals and fossils are beautifully exhibited in three large displays: Reading the Rocks, Treasures of the Earth: Gems and Minerals and Fossils: Creatures from the Depths of Time.

The Bug Room, featuring live invertebrates in replicas of their natural habitats, is the space where kids either "Oohh" or "Ick" while The Bird Gallery showcases birds of Alberta along with an extensive display of eggs from around the world.

The final display in this gallery is Our Green World - The Diverse Vegetation and Flora of Alberta which demonstrates the four eco regions of Alberta.

The Syncrude Gallery of Aboriginal Culture highlights many customs, artifacts, and history of Alberta Aboriginals and is one of the largest museum portrayals of native-themed displays in Canada.

Make sure you visit the Wild Alberta Gallery of the Royal Alberta Museum. We saw and admired the fantastic wild animal dioramas in early 2001. The museum has since updated the display. Seeing this area is worth the price of admission.

Educational opportunities abound through the Royal Alberta Museum.

Education programs for school children, a week-long on-site museum school program and distance learning opportunities featuring virtual exhibits and access to online publications are features of the program.

A themed film series, guest lecturers, feature displays, and displays on loan from other museums round out the educational emphases.

The museum archives, called Collections and Research, hosts materials in several disciplines. Check the website for information on how to contact the curator of the area you're researching.

The museum also publishes interesting Alberta-themed books and booklets. A few of the many past titles include:

  • A Traveller's Guide to Geological Wonders in Alberta
  • Federation of Alberta Naturalists Field Guide to Alberta Birds
  • Alberta Butterflies
  • Alberta Mammals: An Atlas and Guide

Areas of Study

The museum now boasts thirteen separate areas of study, represented in the displays and archives of the organization. These areas include:

  • Archaeology
  • Botany
  • Cultural Studies
  • Ethnology
  • Geology
  • Ichthyology
  • Invertebrate Zoology
  • Mammalogy
  • Military and Government History
  • Ornithology
  • Quaternary Environments
  • Quaternary Palaeontology
  • Western Canadian History

Quick and Quirky Museum Tidbits

  • Largest public access collection of artifacts from the early fur trading companies, circa 1790 and beyond.
  • The combined museum collection includes over ten million items. Wow! The Royal Alberta Museum hosts a large collection of religious implements and clothing.
  • Some amazing virtual exhibits you can peruse online represent both local and global features
  • Anno Domini: Jesus through the Centuries
  • Alberta's Fish Diversity
  • Rise of the Black Dragon: Cultural Treasures from China
  • Butterflies North and South
  • Christmas Traditions in France and Canada
  • Traveling Exhibits are loaned to museums throughout Alberta. Check online for dates.
  • For example, the traveling exhibit entitled "Chop Suey on the Prairies" runs through August 31, 2012. The online trailer for the exhibit begins, "There are more Chinese restaurants in North America than there are fast food outlets combined." Included is a History of Ginger Beef feature, a Chinese dish that originated in Alberta and has a British connection. Read online for the story or check out the traveling display at a museum near you!
