Rutherford House Edmonton Review
One sunny weekday my friend and I enjoyed delicious afternoon tea at the Arbour Room of the Rutherford House before touring the house itself.
A costumed interpreter escorted us through the house and cheerfully pointed out salient facts and interesting features of the house.
The Rutherford HouseThe Rutherford House Provincial Historic Site is a beautiful, century-old home on the campus of the University of Alberta.
Originally built to house Alberta's first Premier, the Rutherford House now stands as a monument to life and architecture of the early 1900s.
In keeping with the position of the Rutherford family in society in the early 1900s, the house was well-suited to host soirees, entertain students, faculty and other guests, and serve the family's needs comfortably.
Alexander Cameron (A. C.) Rutherford moved his family into the newly completed home in 1911.
Situated on the banks of the North Saskatchewan River, the spacious home served as a hub of hospitality and entertainment for the Rutherford family and their many guests and friends.
Now restored, the house contains artifacts and furnishings from the Rutherford family and from the Edwardian era. Interpreters in period costume escort visitors throughout the house while recounting fascinating facts and tidbits from those early years.
After Mrs. Rutherford's death in 1939 the house was sold to and operated by the U of A's Delta Upsilon fraternity.
In the early 1970's the house was slated for removal until the University Women's Club strong lobbying saved the house, paving the way for the house to be opened as a provincial historic site in 1974.
