Upper Crust Edmonton Review
Spawned from a successful catering business, the Upper Crust Cafe opened its' doors in the southside Garneau section of Edmonton in 1986.
This neighbourhood cafe is comfortably situated at a busy thoroughfare and garnered a loyal following while enjoying expansion over the years.
When first entering the doors for a weekday lunch break, one notices the display case of home baked goods.
Cakes, pies, squares, cookies and breads are all temptingly arranged by the front entry. Directly past the baked goods is a case of deli salads.
Beyond that is the seating. The decor gives and overall impression of peaceful friendliness.
We enjoyed pleasant attentiveness from our server.
The cafe was fairly full, even at an early lunch time. Couples, business associates, friends, and moms with their little ones enjoyed lunch while we were there. Many others stopped by for take-out.
There was seating for about 80 people, including a room which can be closed off for private events.
My friend and I ordered from the daily special menu board. She had the mushroom and brie quiche with cole slaw and molasses bread.
The quiche crust was flaky and flavourful and the filling creamy with plenty of mushrooms. My friend liked the vinegar based dressing on the slaw and raved over the delicious bread.
I opted for the Beef Bourguignon with mashed potatoes and grilled vegetables. The beef cubes were quite flavourful, but a bit tough.
I loved the al dente grilled veggies, and especially enjoyed the asparagus and baby bok choy. The freshly made mashed potatoes were subtly garlicky and very good.
Upper Crust Edmonton takes pride in cooking with fresh produce and buys local as much as possible. Among other featured foods, they are noted for their exceptional potato salad and their 4-salad entree, neither of which we tried at this lunch.
We did, however, opt for a couple of signature desserts to cap our meals. My friend enjoyed a lemon square and I selected the signature Upper Crust dessert, Sticky Toffee Pudding.
The square was quite large, very lemony with a tasty crust.
The Sticky Toffee Pudding was amazingly delicious. The pudding was dense with just an undercurrent of ground date flavour. Served with a very good butter-based butterscotch sauce and a dollop of real whipped cream, this dessert is worth saving up your calories for!
Upper Crust still runs a catering business. Pricing and forms can be found online.
Would I go again? Absolutely! I hear the Saturday brunch selections are worth checking out and I would certainly stop by to pick up some of their wonderful home-baked goods.
