Zambelli's Leduc Review
There is a warm and inviting atmosphere in Zambellis as you walk into the restaurant.
The open concept seating is tables only (no booths) with the high painted industrial ceiling that's very popular in restaurants today.
We were seated promptly and brought our beverages.
The restaurant looks like it seats about 150, not including the separate lounge area. There was a steady stream of patrons keeping the place at least 2/3 full at this Tuesday lunch time.
My husband ordered one of the daily specials, Potato Crusted Cod with Fried Shrimp while I selected Chicken Souvlaki with Greek Salad. Our meals arrived promptly, served by our professionally courteous and attentive server.
The cod was very moist and flaky inside while the outside crust was crispy without being greasy.
The large shrimp added a nice seafood touch and the mixed wild and white rice really appealed to my husband. The salad looked crisp and fresh but was mostly greens, not a favorite of the man in my life.
I enjoyed the souvlaki very much. The chicken was slightly dry, but had great flavor, nicely seasoned without being spicy, all served Greek style on a skewer over a bed of mixed rice.
The delicious homemade tzatziki that accompanied it was very, very good. I'm not a big rice fan, but found this rice to be pleasant with a good contrast between the dense wild rice grains and the softer but still firm white rice. The Greek salad tasted delightful, while the Kalamata olives, fresh vegetables and Feta cheese were reminiscent of some of the flavorful salads we enjoyed in Greece last year.
The decor of Zambelli's is full of columns, Greek vases, pictures of the Acropolis, and other Greek artifacts.
It's fun to wander around and look at everything.
An obvious decoration that is not Greek is displayed near the entrance of Zambellis. One can't help but notice a large, antique oil pump, a reminder that oil was first discovered in Leduc in 1947.
We were puzzled and amused that a Greek restaurant would offer a menu page of French fare. We discovered that Claude, the owner, is a French Canadian who purchased the restaurant about 15 years ago.
Claude's wife had worked at Zambelli's for the original owners since the restaurant had first opened, and brought with her the history and experience of the original Zambellis.
Claude included some of his signature French and French Canadian dishes on the menu when he took over the restaurant. Mystery solved!
Heading to Edmonton International Airport? Zambelli's is quite close to the airport and would be a good place to stop for a meal. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.
